This is a luscious vintage movie that has had several remakes, the most new being “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Having seen both versions, this 1940 film has got it beat. Beautifully directed by Ernst Lubitsch, this is a charming, romantic comedy that sets the standard for this genre of film.

The premise of the film is simple. In Budapest, Hungary, a young woman advertises for a pen pal, with the proviso that each are to remain anonymous. A young man responds to her ad, and they open corresponding and topple in admire through the mail. Unbeknownst to them, these two amorous correspondents, Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) are co-workers in a leather goods shop owned by Hugo Matuschek (Frank Morgan of Wizard of Oz fame) . Unfortunately, they do not appear to rep along, and the words flit snappily and angry between them at times.

There is also a strong sub-plot in this film, enchanting the cuckolding of Mr. Matuschek by his wife of twenty two years. It is a sub-plot that causes a greatly anguished Mr. Matuschek to turn on an employee whom he holds most dear. This sets in to motion a sequence of interconnecting events and revelations that work beautifully, setting the film for its final resolution between the two main protagonists, Kralik and Novak.

James Stewart gives a terrific performance as Kralik, the working stiff who is impartial looking for the accurate girl and finds her where he least expected. Stewart always shines when playing the classic Everyman. Margaret Sullavan, as Novak, gives a pert and sassy performance that belies her longing for romance in her life and for her knight in lustrous armor. Her captivating tongued banter with Kralik disguises an attraction that even she does not fully understand. As they say, there is a dazzling line between savor and disapprove.

Frank Morgan gives a well-nuanced, scene stealing performance as Matuschek, the shopkeeper whose heart is initially broken on a number of fronts. In the extinguish, he rights what went bad and finds some surcease for his psychic injure by bringing some happiness to another person. Felix Bressart, as the grand Pirovitch, Kralik’s friend and co-worker, and Joseph Schildkraut, as the unctuous Ferenc Vadas, a co-worker whom Kralik detests, are also to be lauded for their performances. William Tracy, as the indefatigable Pepi Katona, the store messenger on the develop, is absolutely enjoyable.

This is a masterfully directed film, with extraordinary performances by the entire cast. It is a film to be remembered and added to one’s personal collection. Bravo!

The makers of the stage musical, SHE LOVES ME, wisely stuck with the SHOP AROUND THE CORNER location and produced a most palatable present.Stewart and Sullavan design a noble team, with objective the factual balance in their developing relationship to design the ending not only possible, but even inevitable. The supporting cast is nearly perfect, especially the always good Frank Morgan. Felix Bressart, as Pirovich, and Joseph Schildkraut, as the arrogant but slippery villain, are a delight to notice.Don’t impartial rent this movie–buy it! You will want to see it again and again. And each time will seem as unusual as the first, because there isn’t a fake notice in the whole film.

For pure, unadulterated, visceral entertainment, the “Lone Wolf and Cub” series can’t be beat. The acting, directing, the screenplays, and the cinematography are all top notch. The action sequences have to be seen to be believed. Each and every film feature loads of “money shots”. Fans of Tarantino will immediately peep where he drew grand of his inspiration for the “Ruin Bill” series. I suspect that these movies were an influence on “Grand Python and the Holy Grail” as well. People with no experience with Japanese cinema will probably accept these movies to be very bizarre the first time they gaze them. I can’t say enough favorable things about these movies. They are so satisfying on every level. You’ll gain a bustle at the over-the-top scenes of violence. You may even inaugurate to ask your Westernized notions of morality. Be cautioned though: these movies are not for the squeamish. Volume 1 and 3, in particular, feature very disturbing depictions of rape and kill. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“Lone Wolf and Cub” is the pinnacle of Asian grindhouse cinema and the most action-packed and downright frosty series of samurai films ever made. The violence is brutal, the sex (both forced and consensual) is plentiful, the characters are memorable, and there is a lot of subtle humor and graceful Japanese culture to be enjoyed as well. I cannot recommend these six films enough.

Beginning as the Shogun’s personal executioner, our anti-hero Ogami Itto is framed by the jealous and ambitious Yagyu clan’s shadow ops; his wife murdered in the process. In his rage, Itto takes his young son, Daigoro, and declares them to be demons, apart from the world of men to live as assassins for hire. His necessary target: the head of the Shadow Yagyus, a decrepit former warrior known as Retsudo. Along the scheme he encounters hidden ninja and other Yagyu warriors, deadly kunoichi, clan heads in need of his services, agreeable villagers, prostitutes, yakuza, Retsudo’s skilled offspring, and many more, most of whom will either be diced up by his sword, or by his enemies’. Thankfully, Lone Wolf and Cub are more than ready for whatever comes their diagram. Ogami Itto pushes his son around in a modified baby cart that is packed bulky of hidden surprises for anyone who wishes to acquire his head. And nobody is his equal with a sword. Nobody. Amusingly, Daigoro manages to rack up a miniature body count of his fill and embarks on his possess minute adventures from time to time too.

In order to retrieve the information famous to his mission in “Baby Cart in the Land of Demons” Lone Wolf and Cub must past the deadly tests save forth by five of the clans retainers who can appear anywhere at any time. Lastly “White Heaven in Hell” pits Ogami Itto and son against a Yagyu clan desperate to finally avenge their shame by ending their lives. Lord Retsudo orders every person who helps or even speaks to them to be establish to death. As Itto flees civilization into the frozen mountains, Retsudo sends his supernaturally-powered ninja to stalk him while the remainder of the clan’s army is brought up for the slay game. All of these films are must-sees for martial-arts and action fans.

The bonus features include many trailers, particularly for Zatoichi films (Shintaro Katsu -who played the legendary blind swordsman- produced the first three films and cast this brother, Tomisaburo Wakayama, as Ogami Itto) . I have heard about this movie (I live in the Netherlands) and it was not available anywhere in Europe. I did not want to wait untill it will be screened on dutch television, so I bought it. I am glad to, it fits my collection of top documentaries. The suspense of the documentary and the astonishing myth got me a bit in doubt if it is a accurate documentary or a fictional one. It does not matter. It is even more realistic then the Blair Witch project, with the sizable contrast that this could be and is probably an precise documentary. Anyway, I heard rumours in Amsterdam about the Mole People film and how hard it is to accept it. Now i am fragment of the Mole People society?

This film is a classic and viscerally unprejudiced portrayal of human conflict and personal growth. It clearly depicts working class young adults who sought to rupture away from past barriers and limitations and get better lives for themselves. It is a coming of age tale, where a corpulent spectrum of feelings are explored as young adults learn about fulfilling their potential, building value systems and attempting to fulfill personal desires with honesty and integrity on many levels. Two hot young stars were cast in the leading roles: Richard Gere who was riding high on his new success in “American Gigolo” and Debra Winger who shined in her role in “Urban Cowboy”. With stars of this caliber, it surprised me to learn (in the Special Features fraction) that doubts existed about the film’s acceptance by theater audiences. In fact, the script had made the rounds of different studios for eight years, with no one courageous to obtain the film which was essentially about training Naval pilots. The exertion was it was too cessation to the ruin of the Viet Nam War and would be rejected by the public as being about war. Luckily, the film was interpreted very differently by the viewing audience who saw it in a definite light where personal survival, transformation and the expression of like were the key elements successfully played out on film.

Richard Gere stars as Zack Mayo, a hardened, slightly rebellious loner who locked up his feelings and dared not net emotionally terminate to people. It was Gunnery Sergeant Foley’s job to detect weakness of character and courage, to eliminate candidates who would not survive under the harsh conditions of war. Foley knew of Zack’s streetwise rebellious tendencies and rode him hard. Foley and Zack clashed periodically and one climactic scene especially stood out … where Foley meted out severe discipline and punishment to regain Zack to ask for a “D.O.R” scoot (tumble out on expect) . Zack endured the punishment and after a particularly difficult session of physical endurance tests, Zack *finally* gut wrenchingly admitted, “I got nowhere else to go” …

Besides the sure fable about a group of young adults who under go rigorous training to become Naval pilots, several other stories arise and are fully developed within the location which makes this film so highly fascinating. Early on, Sgt Foley warned the candidates that young ladies who work in local factories, arrive from across the Puget Sound, to meet Naval candidates, with one goal in mind: to marry a Navy pilot. Zack and his friend Sid are dressed to raze in their white uniforms during a social dance where they connect with two charming and handsome factory workers of similar age to themselves. Paula plays it icy, claiming to demand nothing but she *does* manage to melt his cold exterior when their physical relationship becomes more steamy and personal. The guys discuss their plans to smash off the liasons after graduation. As the demolish of their training is approach, the two candidates wintry their relationships with the two ladies. Lynette pulls a trick to derive Sid, that backfires in ways totally unimaginable. Mood and tone are expressed intelligently through the emotions of adventure, torture, romance, and entertainment. My popular aspect of this movie is Jack Nitzsche’s unforgettable scoring. The mood and tone ties in together as the music plays, and makes the audiences feel spontaneous of what they are watching (especially with the like themes) .

One of the finest films of all time, directed by Fred ( High Noon, From Here to Eternity ) Zinnemann. Among the ensemble of players are Wendy Hiller, Orson Welles, Susanna York, Robert Shaw, Leo Mc Kern and–in one of his earliest roles–a young John Distress. Truly a cast for all seasons!

It’s an acting lesson, headed by the spacious Paul Scofield who not only captures the essence of Sir Thomas Moore, but who does so with apt economy of motion; he hardly makes a gesture thoughout the entire film— Duse would have loved it.

How does he do it? Well, as I said, it’s an acting lesson. Suffice it to say he rightly deserved winning the Oscar.

Magnificent in every respect.

I have loved this movie since I saw it in its novel release too many years ago. Certainly, Sir Thomas More was a heavenly person who died a martyr and has been canonized a saint. However, don’t confuse the play and movie with the flesh and blood man. He was remarkable more complex in actual life than the purely helpful performance of Paul Scofield. You can read the biography of Thomas More by Peter Ackroyd to pick up at some of his complexities.

But this is a amazing movie and I recommend it with colossal enthusiasm. It is a considerable movie and can have some useful at least temporary curative do on the soul suffering under the ironical detachment and cynicism of our time. Scofield is incredible and the definitive performance of this role. Orson Welles is quite special as the stout and unsuitable Cardinal Wolsey. John Afflict is noble as the traitor Richard Rich. Shaw is pleasing as Henry VIII as is the rest of the cast.

And who can forget the line where More asks to behold chain of office that Richard Rich was given to perjure himself and betray More. After examining it and being told that Sir Richard was made the Attorney General of Wales More says, “Richard, it profits a man nothing to trade his soul for the whole world, but for Wales …” Fabulous stuff.

The disk offers the wide veil theatrical release and a bulky camouflage version for those who like to gaze less of the portray in order to avoid the upper and lower “bars”. There is also the unique trailer.

This movie was never intended to feature Shirley Temple as a star. At the time this movie was made, she was a minor child actor who had never been on film before, and had she not subsequently been made distinguished by other movies, her role in this film would have been either forgotten, or relegated to an obscure footnote in the history of American movies. It is totally dishonest of the original distributors of “Stand Up and Cheer” to give Miss Temple top billing and a photograph on the camouflage of the VHS. She was not the star of this movie at all! She has a 2-bit fraction in a movie that starred bigger names in Hollywood. But if you are Shirley Temple die hard who must have everything she ever did, recall this film (caveat emptor) . If you are a student of the American cinema, and want to gawk how pleasant (or unpleasant) an early talkie was, then you should certainly recall this movie, if nothing else for its historical significance. If you want to peruse rare film footage of “The Princess of American Song” Sylvia Froos (one of the immense voices of the 1930s), Purchase THIS VIDEO. But don’t bewitch this if you are expecting a sweet, polished performance from Miss Temple a la “Heidi”.

I bought this movie mainly because Shirley Temple was going to be in it. From reading some of the reviews, I knew it would not be one of her best. After watching the movie, I realized it was not her acting that was lacking, but the dwelling of the movie itself. Some aspects of the movie were nasty, such as the scenes with the dismal man playing an idiot and kissing up the white people in the movie (I, as an African American was disgusted) ; however, it must be realized that such things reflected the times in which the movie was made. Also, the movie’s spot didn’t really proceed along and many times was confusing or listless, although it did do an excellent job at showing what that time period was like in America. As for Shirley, her scenes, though few, were the best in the film. I loved the dance routine, but besides those few scenes the movie was not very luscious. If you want some of Shirley’s better works, I suggest you purchase Radiant Eyes (my personal current), Awful Dinky Rich Girl, or Wee Willie Winkie.

We bought this video after previously watching and enjoying the French volume 1 from the same company. My 3-year ancient daughter loves this one even more!
